The three strands The programme of the whole course is based on three strands. - Methodology
- Intercultural Communicative Competence
- Tools
Methodology deals didactics/ teaching methodology in a virtual environment. It explores the potential of synchronous communication whilst balancing it with asynchronous learning activities. This typically consists of evaluating lesson observations, reflective writing, planning and preparing learning units and learning methodology. It reflects upon productive skills, receptive skills, role play, grammar teaching, error correction etc. At the end of the 3 months course, the language trainer is able to demonstrate an understanding of the role of the online language teacher, and situate themselves within that role. He is also able to plan, prepare for, and conduct appropriate synchronous online language lessons in a variety of scenarios, with a variety of language learners, for a variety of purposes. Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC) is relevant for purposeful language teaching in virtual environments due to the fact that students may come from various cultural backgrounds and nationalities. Apart from requiring the trainees to engage in multiple self-reflective activities on ICC, the inclusion of permanent discussion of all receeved input with fellow trainees in peer-to-peer interaction as well as group sessions is designed supply the trainees with a heightened understanding of the components, facets, issues and importance for language teaching of ICC. At the end of the 3 months course, the language trainer is able to demonstrate a critical understanding on issues relating the interculturual commmunicative competence and how this informs effective language teaching. Tools deals with a variety of synchronous and asynchronous Internet communication technology not only conveying the technical know-how of how to operate the technologies in isolation, but also to let the trainer understand their potential in the light of pedagogical and didactical considerations. The tools introduced become increasingly complex whilst reflecting and commenting on their pedagogical value and potential of their use in online learning sessions. At the end of the 3 month course, the language trainer is able to manage a range of technologies afforded by Internet-based synchronous learning environments or tools, and show how these support effective language teaching and learning. LANCELOT Course material The course material developed by the LANCELOT Project and funded by the European Commission is available under the Creative Commons Licensing Agreement. English material German material | Concerning intercultural competences, I think the virtual environment is a brilliant medium for developing these skills... I have found the opportunity of learning live with people from so many countries who live in so many areas of the world a wonderful experience. I really like the thought that no existing country boundaries on maps and between cultures can no longer divide people. These barriers between people can be made powerless. I think everyone would benefit from learning in such an environment. Brigitte Falker, English and German teacher in Austria
The course has contributed not only to reinforce my teaching methods but also to consider alternative approaches. Confronting with peers has been a very rewarding experience. Ana Lorenzon, English teacher in Italy.
